How to Negotiate Salary with a Recruiter

From: Candidate Thomas Stewart

To: Recruiter James Smith

Subject: Re: Your Offer for Position at AmazMetaGoog

Hi James,

Thanks for the offer, but I have to say it's not quite what I was expecting. Honestly, it doesn't feel competitive compared to what I currently receive. My current company offers a 10% annual bonus, better vacation days, and additional perks that aren't included in your package.

Given that, I'll need at least a 20% increase on your offer to even consider moving forward. I think it's only fair, considering my experience and the market rates. Can you make this adjustment? Otherwise, it may not make sense for me to leave my current position.

Let me know if you can accommodate this.

Best,

Thomas

Subject: Re: Your Offer for Position at AmazMetaGoog

Hi James,

Thank you again for extending the offer and for considering me for this exciting opportunity. I'm genuinely thrilled about the role and how well it aligns with my career aspirations. AmazMetaGoog is exactly the kind of company where I see myself growing and contributing meaningfully.

That said, after evaluating the offer and comparing it to my current compensation package, I noticed a few differences. My current employer provides a 10% annual bonus, a more robust vacation benefits package, and other perks not included in the current offer.

To make the transition more compelling, I was wondering if there's flexibility to increase the offer by approximately 20%. I believe this adjustment would better reflect my experience and make the opportunity even more aligned with my career goals. I greatly appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best regards,

Thomas Stewart

FAQ

Salary Negotiation Scripts: Common Questions

Honest answers from FAANG insiders. No fluff, no theory.

Where can I find salary negotiation scripts that actually work?

Generic scripts on the open internet are written for any salary negotiation — they ignore how big tech recruiters actually operate, where the comp committee draws the line, and which levers move at which company. SalaryScript publishes word-for-word counter-offer emails, recruiter pushbacks, and closing lines that have been used in real FAANG negotiations to add $30K–$300K. You can browse our free guides on this site or unlock the full playbook below.

What is a salary negotiation script?

A salary negotiation script is a pre-written response — usually an email or talking-point — for a specific moment in the offer process: the first verbal offer, the recruiter's 'what would it take?' question, the exploding-offer deadline, the final close. The right script gives you something to say when adrenaline would otherwise make you accept too fast or push back too hard.

Do recruiters expect candidates to negotiate?

Yes. FAANG recruiters negotiate dozens of offers a month. Comp committees explicitly leave room in initial offers because they expect a counter. Not negotiating signals you didn't have other options — which can lower the recruiter's incentive to advocate for you on level, refreshers, or sign-on.

How much can I realistically negotiate at a FAANG company?

It depends on level, competing offers, and which lever you push. Base salary is often capped per level. RSUs and sign-on bonuses typically have $50K–$200K of room at senior levels. Entry-level offers usually have $10K–$30K of room. Our guides break this down per company.

Can I negotiate without a competing offer?

Yes, but the scripts are different. Without a competing offer, you negotiate on level, scope, market data, and your unique qualifications. We publish specific scripts for each of these scenarios.

Will negotiating risk the offer being rescinded?

In over a decade of working in and around FAANG hiring, we have almost never seen this happen from a professional, good-faith negotiation. Companies invest thousands of dollars to recruit you — they won't throw that away because you asked for more. Rude or ultimatum-style negotiation is a different story.
