Anduril Salary Negotiation: A Big Tech Insider's Playbook

Anduril is one of the fastest-growing private companies in tech: a $61B round in May 2026, an employee tender reported at about $90B in October, and a headcount that roughly doubled in 2025. Its offers reflect that. Base is solid but not the story, there's essentially no annual bonus, and most of the upside sits in private equity you can only sell when Anduril runs a tender. So the negotiation is about your level, the size of the equity grant and the price it's set at, and a sign-on that covers the cash you're giving up. (Anduril is private and its terms change; confirm everything in your written offer.)

Anduril IC2 to IC5: what each level pays

Median US software engineer total comp at Anduril by level, from Levels.fyi data as of October 2026, with average base alongside. The equity in these numbers is private Anduril stock, valued at the grant price, not cash you can spend.

LevelTitleAvg. baseMedian total comp / year
IC2Entry level~$163K~$228K
IC3Software Engineer~$183K~$266K
IC4Senior~$209K~$311K
IC5Lead~$246K~$518K

Look at the IC4 to IC5 step: median total comp jumps by about $200K a year, more than anything you can win inside a level. Candidates also report that recruiters describe Anduril levels as roughly one below the industry (a Google L4 lands near Anduril's IC3), and down-leveling of experienced engineers comes up repeatedly. If your scope supports the higher level, that is the first fight.

Sample script: countering an Anduril offer on level and equity

Step 1 of the conversation · your opening counter

Subject: Re: Anduril offer - [role]

Hi [Recruiter],

Thank you for the offer. I'm excited about the mission and the team, and I'd like to make this work.

Before I respond on numbers, could you confirm in writing the price per share the equity grant is based on and the resulting share count?

I'd also like to raise two points:

• On level: my current scope includes [concrete evidence: systems owned, team size, comparable level elsewhere]. I'd like to ask whether an [target level] assessment is possible, and if not, what specifically separated me from it.
• On equity and sign-on: I'm comparing this against [comparable company], where my equity is liquid public stock. Moving the grant to $[target] and adding a sign-on of $[Y] to cover the unvested stock I'd forfeit would close that gap.

If we can align on these, I'm ready to sign by [date].

Best,
[Your name]

Then the Anduril recruiter replies

This is the part almost nobody prepares for. You send a clean, well-reasoned counter, and within a day you get something that sounds final, reasonable, and closed. It usually looks close to this:

Step 2 · the reply you have to answer

Hi [Your name],

Thanks for the quick reply, and I'm glad you're excited about the team.

I took this back to the compensation team. We're already at the top of the band for this level, so I don't have room to move the number. I want to be straightforward with you: this is a strong offer, and it's what we're able to do.

I do need an answer by [date] so we can close the role out. Can you let me know either way?

Best,
[Recruiter]

Everything on this page got you to that email. Nothing on this page tells you what to send next.

That gap is where the money is actually lost. Not in the counter, which most people now send, but in the two or three messages after it. Fold there and the $30K to $300K you left behind does not disappear once: it becomes the base your refreshers, raises, and every future offer get benchmarked against for years.

The 7 replies you will get, and what to send back

The recruiter runs this conversation dozens of times a quarter. You run it once every few years. Here is the first counter-move in full, free, so you can judge the rest.

"We're already at the top of the band for this level."

Free

What it actually means: almost always true, and almost always beside the point. Bands are set per level. "Top of the band" describes which box Anduril put you in. It says nothing about what you are worth to them.

What to send back

"That's helpful, thank you. If the band is fixed at this level, then the level is the real question, not the number inside it. Based on [scope you own today], I think the case for [target level] is strong. What would you need to see from me to support that assessment?"

Why it works: it accepts the constraint instead of arguing with it, then moves the conversation to the one variable that is still open. A recruiter can rarely move a band. They can very often re-open a level.

The other 6, and the counter-move for each, are in the playbook:

How Anduril comp is structured

  • → Base salary: Competitive and set by level. Posted US ranges run from about $112K to $149K for early-career roles up to $166K to $220K for experienced engineers. Candidates report base moves only with real leverage.
  • → Equity: The centerpiece. Recent grants are reported as double-trigger RSUs: they vest over four years, 25% after the first year and then monthly, but generally aren't fully yours to sell until a liquidity event. Grant size is a dollar value divided by a recent share price. This is the piece to understand before you sign.
  • → Liquidity: No public market and no IPO plan; the CEO said in July 2026 that Anduril is "not in a rush to go out." Employees sell through company-run tenders. The October 2026 tender was reported at $94.80 a share, capped at about $1.3B, and for the first time open to staff in 16 countries.
  • → Bonus: Effectively none. Levels.fyi shows annual bonuses near zero, and job postings pitch equity rather than a bonus program.
  • → Sign-on bonus: Case by case. Reported amounts cluster around $15K to $30K, with relocation handled separately.
  • → Refreshers: Reported to start in year two at roughly a quarter of the original grant, adjusted for performance. Treat that as an anecdote and ask what applies to you.

The levers that actually move at Anduril

Level

The highest-value lever, and the one most at risk. Candidates report being offered a level below their experience, often blamed on the system design round. If the offer comes in low, ask what separated you from the next level and answer it with specific scope and impact. The IC4 to IC5 step alone is worth roughly $200K a year at the median.

Equity grant size and price

Where most of the movement happens. Ask for a specific dollar target, and ask in writing what price per share the grant is set at and how many shares that buys. With the tender priced well above the May 2026 round, the price used for your grant can change its real value a lot.

Sign-on bonus

With no annual bonus and illiquid equity, cash in year one matters. Tie the ask to something documented: unvested public stock or a bonus you forfeit by leaving. Reported negotiations have added a $25K sign-on alongside a higher base.

Location and commitment

Anduril is largely on-site, with offices beyond Costa Mesa including Seattle, Boston and the DC area. Candidates have used office choice as part of the conversation, and an Anduril employee on Blind suggested offering to drop other interview loops in exchange for more equity. Only offer that if you mean it.

How to value Anduril equity before you sign

Most of an Anduril offer is private stock, so the number on the offer letter is only as good as the assumptions behind it. Recent grants are reported to be double-trigger RSUs: time-based vesting over four years, plus a liquidity event before you can actually sell. There's no strike price to pay, and RSUs like these are generally taxed as ordinary income when they settle, whether that's an IPO, an acquisition or a tender sale.

The share price is the question to get right. Anduril raised at $61B in May 2026, and the October tender was reported at $94.80 a share, implying about $90B. Ask which price your grant is based on, how many shares that buys, and whether new hires can take part in future tenders and on what terms. A grant set at a higher price buys fewer shares for the same dollar value. Then discount the whole equity line for time: there is no IPO date, and tenders happen when Anduril decides to run them.

Who can join, and why it changes the math

Anduril's postings require US-person status because of export-controlled work, and some programs need a security clearance. Most roles are on-site, with remote limited to a narrow set of senior software positions. Those constraints shrink the candidate pool, and that cuts both ways in a negotiation: Anduril has fewer alternatives for a strong cleared or clearance-eligible engineer, but it also knows many of its candidates are choosing between defense tech and big tech, not between two defense companies.

If you hold an active clearance or relevant defense experience, say so plainly, because it's scarce and it supports a higher level. If you're coming from big tech, the comparison the recruiter expects is liquid public RSUs versus private Anduril equity. Make that comparison explicit and put a number on the liquidity you're giving up.

Where the leverage is, in order

Reports are mixed in a useful way. Candidates with competing offers describe real movement, such as a base raised from $175K to $189K plus a $25K sign-on. Candidates without one describe a wall: "RSUs are near max," or a new-grad offer described as too good to negotiate. So the order is: get the level right, back your ask with a competing offer or hard market data, push the equity grant with a specific dollar target, then use the sign-on to cover the cash gap from having no bonus.

Deadlines can be short; one reported offer came with a one-week window. Get the offer in writing, ask your equity questions before you counter, and send one clear, specific message. Start from a proven salary negotiation email template, and if the clock is tight, read how big tech offer deadlines really work first.

Frequently asked questions about Anduril comp

Does Anduril negotiate salary?

Yes, but mostly when you have leverage. Candidates with competing offers report moving base, equity and sign-on, while candidates without one often hear the equity is near max. The biggest lever is your level, followed by the equity grant size and a sign-on bonus.

Does Anduril give RSUs or stock options?

Recent Anduril grants are reported as double-trigger RSUs, which vest over time but generally can't be sold until a liquidity event such as a tender, an acquisition or an IPO. Older grants included options, which is why some data sites list both. Confirm the instrument and terms of your grant in writing.

How does Anduril equity vest?

According to Levels.fyi data, Anduril equity vests over four years: 25% after the first year, then monthly. Grant size is a dollar value converted to shares at a recent price, so ask which price your grant uses and how many shares you'll receive.

Can Anduril employees sell their shares?

Only through company-run tender offers. In October 2026 Anduril opened an employee tender reported at $94.80 a share, capped at about $1.3B and open to current and former employees in 16 countries. There is no IPO date; the CEO said in July 2026 the company is not in a rush to go public.

Does Anduril pay a bonus?

Not in a meaningful way. Levels.fyi shows annual bonuses near zero, and job postings emphasize equity instead. Sign-on bonuses are available case by case, with reported amounts mostly between $15K and $30K.

Do I need a security clearance to work at Anduril?

Not for every role. Anduril's postings require US-person status because of export-controlled information, and some programs require clearance eligibility or an active clearance. Most roles are on-site.
