COMPANY PLAYBOOK

SpaceX Salary Negotiation: A Big Tech Insider's Playbook

SpaceX went public in June 2026 at $135 a share (Nasdaq: SPCX), and it now owns xAI and Cursor, so an offer from any of the three is paid in the same public stock. That changes the negotiation. Equity is no longer a private grant you hope to sell at a tender: it's liquid stock with a visible, volatile price. But the structure is still SpaceX's own, with vesting schedules that can run five years, small sign-ons, and pay that differs sharply between SpaceX engineering and xAI. The leverage is in your level, the size of the RSU grant, and understanding exactly which vesting schedule you're being offered. (Terms are changing fast after the IPO; confirm everything in your written offer.)

SpaceX vs xAI: what software engineers are paid

Median US software engineer total comp from Levels.fyi data as of October 2026. SpaceX and xAI are one company now, but they pay very differently, so know which side your offer comes from.

LevelTitleAvg. baseTotal comp / year
SpaceX L1Entry~$135K~$194K
SpaceX L2Software Engineer II~$150K~$226K
SpaceX L3Senior~$175K~$335K
SpaceX L4Principal~$226K~$404K
xAIMember of Technical Staff (median)~$220K~$620K

Two things stand out. SpaceX engineering pays below big tech at most levels, with a median around $204K, and the gap is mostly equity. xAI pays roughly three times as much at the median, mostly in stock. If you're interviewing on both sides, or comparing a SpaceX offer to a FAANG one, these numbers tell you where the negotiation has room and where it doesn't.

Step 1 of the conversation · your opening counter

Subject: Re: SpaceX offer - [role]

Hi [Recruiter],

Thank you for the offer. I'm genuinely excited about the mission and the team, and I'd like to make this work.

Before I respond on numbers, could you confirm the number of shares in the RSU grant, the share price used to set it, and which vesting schedule applies?

I'd also like to raise two points:

• On equity: I'd like to move the grant to [target shares / $target]. If the grant vests over five years, that's especially important, since it spreads the equity thinner than the four-year schedules I'm comparing against.
• On sign-on: by leaving [current company] I'm walking away from $[X] in unvested stock and bonus, plus relocation costs. A sign-on of $[Y] would bridge that.

For context, I'm also weighing an offer from [comparable company] with a [date] deadline. If we can align on these, I'm ready to sign by [date].

Then the SpaceX recruiter replies

This is the part almost nobody prepares for. You send a clean, well-reasoned counter, and within a day you get something that sounds final, reasonable, and closed. It usually looks close to this:

Step 2 · the reply you have to answer

Hi [Your name],

Thanks for the quick reply, and I'm glad you're excited about the team.

I took this back to the compensation team. We're already at the top of the band for this level, so I don't have room to move the number. I want to be straightforward with you: this is a strong offer, and it's what we're able to do.

I do need an answer by [date] so we can close the role out. Can you let me know either way?

Best,
[Recruiter]

Everything on this page got you to that email. Nothing on this page tells you what to send next.

That gap is where the money is actually lost. Not in the counter, which most people now send, but in the two or three messages after it. Fold there and the $30K to $300K you left behind does not disappear once: it becomes the base your refreshers, raises, and every future offer get benchmarked against for years.

The 7 replies you will get, and what to send back

The recruiter runs this conversation dozens of times a quarter. You run it once every few years. Here is the first counter-move in full, free, so you can judge the rest.

"We're already at the top of the band for this level."

Free

What it actually means: almost always true, and almost always beside the point. Bands are set per level. "Top of the band" describes which box SpaceX put you in. It says nothing about what you are worth to them.

What to send back

"That's helpful, thank you. If the band is fixed at this level, then the level is the real question, not the number inside it. Based on [scope you own today], I think the case for [target level] is strong. What would you need to see from me to support that assessment?"

Why it works: it accepts the constraint instead of arguing with it, then moves the conversation to the one variable that is still open. A recruiter can rarely move a band. They can very often re-open a level.

The other 6, and the counter-move for each, are in the playbook:

How SpaceX comp is structured

  • → Base salary: Set by level. Posted ranges include about $135K to $185K for early-career and mid-level engineers in Palo Alto and up to about $270K for senior roles. Candidates have long reported SpaceX doesn't aim to pay top of market on base.
  • → Equity (RSUs): Public SPCX stock since June 2026. SpaceX's filing lists several standard schedules, including 25% after one year then quarterly, and a five-year schedule that vests 20% after one year and then every six months. Find out which one your grant uses: on a five-year schedule, your yearly equity is the grant divided by five, not four.
  • → Lockup: Existing employees' shares are released in stages after the IPO, with the final release around early December 2026. New hires get public stock, but expect the company's trading windows and blackout periods.
  • → Bonus: Small and discretionary. Levels.fyi shows bonuses near zero for most SpaceX engineers.
  • → Sign-on bonus: Historically small, often around $5K to $10K, sometimes combined with relocation. More room at xAI and at senior levels.
  • → ESPP and refreshers: SpaceX has an employee stock purchase plan mentioned in job postings. Refreshers are performance-based and reported to be modest, so the initial grant carries most of your equity.

The levers that actually move at SpaceX

Level

Moves base and equity band together, and at SpaceX the step from L2 to L3 is worth about $110K a year in total comp. If your scope supports senior or principal, make the case with specific evidence before the offer is finalized.

RSU grant size

Candidates consistently report stock as the most flexible part of a SpaceX offer, though less so at entry level. Ask for a specific share count or dollar target, and ask what share price converts dollars into shares, since SPCX has traded between about $105 and $226 since listing.

Vesting schedule

SpaceX uses more than one schedule. A five-year vest spreads the same grant thinner than a four-year one, which lowers your yearly equity by 20%. Ask which schedule applies, and if it's five years, use it to argue for a bigger grant or a sign-on to compensate.

Sign-on and relocation

Small by big tech standards but still worth asking for, especially if you're relocating to Starbase, Hawthorne or Redmond, or leaving unvested stock behind. Tie the ask to a documented amount.

SpaceX and xAI: one company, two pay scales

SpaceX completed its all-stock acquisition of xAI on February 2, 2026, and xAI is now a wholly owned subsidiary, running Grok, X and, since August 2026, Cursor. For a candidate, that means an xAI offer and a SpaceX offer are paid in the same SPCX stock, but at very different levels. On Levels.fyi, xAI's median software engineer package is about $620K a year against about $204K at SpaceX.

The hiring rules differ too. SpaceX roles are subject to export-control rules that require US citizenship, permanent residency or similar status, while xAI postings have offered visa sponsorship. And xAI's culture is its own: former staff describe very long hours, and xAI ran layoffs in early 2026. If you're holding an xAI offer, value the stock as SpaceX stock, and ask in writing which vesting schedule applies after the merger.

Valuing SPCX stock in your offer

The IPO made SpaceX equity much easier to value: there's a public price, and you can sell once your shares vest and the trading window is open. It also made it volatile. SPCX listed at $135, closed its first day near $161, and has traded between about $105 and $226 since. A grant priced at one moment can be worth a third more or a third less a few months later.

Three questions get you an honest number. How many shares is the grant, and what price was used to convert the dollar value? Which vesting schedule applies, four years or five, and is there a cliff? And when can you first sell, given the company's trading windows? If you're comparing against a pre-IPO number you saw quoted, remember SpaceX split its stock five for one before the IPO, so old per-share prices like the $421 tender in late 2025 need dividing by five.

Where the leverage is, in order

Start with level, since it moves everything and the steps are large. Then push the RSU grant, where SpaceX has the most room, with a specific target backed by a competing offer or market data. Use the vesting schedule as an argument: a five-year vest is a reason for a larger grant. Then ask for a sign-on and relocation to cover what you leave behind. Don't expect much on base; that's where candidates report the least movement.

Weigh the whole picture before you counter. SpaceX postings say to expect extended hours and weekends as needed, and xAI's hours are reported to be longer still. That's a legitimate part of the comparison against other offers, and a reason to make the equity count. Put your ask in one clear message, starting from a proven salary negotiation email template, and read how competing offers work at big tech if you have one.

Frequently asked questions about SpaceX comp

Does SpaceX negotiate salary?

Somewhat. Candidates consistently report that stock is the most flexible part of a SpaceX offer, while base moves little and sign-ons are small, often around $5K to $10K. There's less room at entry level. The biggest lever is your level, followed by the RSU grant size.

How do SpaceX RSUs vest?

SpaceX's IPO filing lists several standard schedules, including 25% after one year then quarterly, and a five-year schedule that vests 20% after one year and then every six months. On a five-year schedule your yearly equity is the grant divided by five. Confirm which schedule applies to your grant in writing.

Is SpaceX public now?

Yes. SpaceX priced its IPO on June 11, 2026 at $135 a share and began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX the next day. New hires receive public SPCX stock, subject to the company's trading windows.

Is xAI part of SpaceX?

Yes. SpaceX completed its all-stock acquisition of xAI on February 2, 2026, and xAI is a wholly owned subsidiary. SpaceX also completed its acquisition of Cursor maker Anysphere in August 2026. xAI and Cursor offers are paid in SpaceX stock.

How much do xAI software engineers make?

On Levels.fyi, xAI's median software engineer package is about $620K a year, typically around $220K base plus about $400K a year in stock, roughly three times SpaceX's median. Roles are generally titled Member of Technical Staff rather than numbered levels.

Do I need to be a US citizen to work at SpaceX?

For most SpaceX roles, export-control rules require US citizenship, permanent residency, refugee or asylee status, or eligibility for State Department authorization. xAI postings have offered visa sponsorship, so the rules differ by role. Check the specific posting.
