Waymo Salary Negotiation: A Big Tech Insider's Playbook
Waymo runs a Google-style hiring process and uses Google-style L3 to L8 levels, but it does not pay you in Google stock. New hires are granted Waymo's own private equity, offered as a dollar amount and converted into units at a price Waymo doesn't disclose. Waymo raised $16B at a $126B valuation in February 2026, nearly triple its 2024 mark, so the same dollar grant now buys far fewer units than it did for engineers who joined two years ago. That makes the Waymo negotiation less about the headline number and more about level, the size of the equity grant, and the sign-on that bridges the liquidity you give up. (Waymo is private and its terms change; confirm everything in your written offer.)
Waymo L3 to L6: what each level pays on paper
Average US software engineer pay at Waymo by level, from Levels.fyi data as of October 2026. Treat these as orientation, not a quote: the equity portion is private Waymo stock valued at the company's internal price, not cash or public shares.
| Level | Avg. base | Avg. annual bonus | Avg. total comp / year |
|---|---|---|---|
| L3 | ~$159K | ~$21K | ~$227K |
| L4 | ~$203K | ~$34K | ~$328K |
| L5 | ~$249K | ~$26K | ~$461K |
| L6 | ~$283K | ~$61K | ~$626K |
Two things follow. First, the jump between levels is bigger than anything you will win inside one: L4 to L5 is worth over $100K a year on paper, which is why the level call is the first thing to fight for. Second, on paper Waymo matches or beats Google through L5, but a large share of that number is illiquid private equity. When you compare a Waymo offer to a public-company offer, discount the equity for the fact that you can only sell it when Waymo runs a liquidity event.
Sample script: countering a Waymo offer on equity and sign-on
Step 1 of the conversation · your opening counter
Subject: Re: Waymo offer - [role]
Hi [Recruiter], Thank you for the offer. I'm genuinely excited about the team and what Waymo is building, and I'd like to make this work. I've compared the package against my other options for this level, and I want to raise two specific points: • On equity: I'd like to move the grant to $[target] over four years. Since this is private equity with no fixed liquidity schedule, could you also confirm the price per unit it converts at? • On sign-on: by leaving [current company] I'm walking away from $[X] in vested and unvested public stock over the next year. A sign-on of $[Y] would bridge that. For context, I'm also weighing an offer from [comparable company] with a [date] deadline. If we can align on these two points, I'm ready to sign by [date]. Happy to talk it through. Best, [Your name]
Copied. Now read what the Waymo recruiter sends back, and be honest about whether you know your next line.

This is the part almost nobody prepares for. You send a clean, well-reasoned counter, and within a day you get something that sounds final, reasonable, and closed. It usually looks close to this:
Step 2 · the reply you have to answer
Hi [Your name], Thanks for the quick reply, and I'm glad you're excited about the team. I took this back to the compensation team. We're already at the top of the band for this level, so I don't have room to move the number. I want to be straightforward with you: this is a strong offer, and it's what we're able to do. I do need an answer by [date] so we can close the role out. Can you let me know either way? Best, [Recruiter]
Everything on this page got you to that email. Nothing on this page tells you what to send next.
That gap is where the money is actually lost. Not in the counter, which most people now send, but in the two or three messages after it. Fold there and the $30K to $300K you left behind does not disappear once: it becomes the base your refreshers, raises, and every future offer get benchmarked against for years.
The 7 replies you will get, and what to send back
The recruiter runs this conversation dozens of times a quarter. You run it once every few years. Here is the first counter-move in full, free, so you can judge the rest.
"We're already at the top of the band for this level."
FreeWhat it actually means: almost always true, and almost always beside the point. Bands are set per level. "Top of the band" describes which box Waymo put you in. It says nothing about what you are worth to them.
What to send back
"That's helpful, thank you. If the band is fixed at this level, then the level is the real question, not the number inside it. Based on [scope you own today], I think the case for [target level] is strong. What would you need to see from me to support that assessment?"
Why it works: it accepts the constraint instead of arguing with it, then moves the conversation to the one variable that is still open. A recruiter can rarely move a band. They can very often re-open a level.
The other 6, and the counter-move for each, are in the playbook:

How Waymo comp is structured
- → Base salary: Set by level and location. Reports suggest base is the least flexible part of the offer, so don't spend your leverage here first.
- → Equity (Waymo units): Waymo's own private stock, not GOOG. Offers state a dollar amount that is converted to units at the grant-date price. Equity vests over four years, 25% a year, with a one-year cliff and monthly vesting after that, according to Levels.fyi data. This is the piece to understand before you sign.
- → Pricing and valuation: Grants are reportedly priced at the internal (409A) common-stock price, which sits below the price investors paid. Recruiters sometimes pitch the equity as worth more than its grant value for that reason; treat that as a sales argument, not a promise.
- → Liquidity: No public market and no announced IPO. Employees describe periodic company-run liquidity events, but Waymo has not published their timing or price, so you cannot plan around a date.
- → Bonus: An annual cash bonus is part of the package; offer letters have quoted targets around 15% of base, though it varies by level.
- → Sign-on bonus: Used and negotiable. Reported offers range from around $30K at staff level to $50K in year one plus $50K in year two for a senior engineer.
The levers that actually move at Waymo
Level
Waymo's process ends in a Google-style hiring committee, and the level it assigns sets base, bonus and equity band together. If the offer comes in a level below what your scope supports, make a specific, evidence-based case before the offer is finalized. It is worth more than any in-band negotiation.
Equity grant size
The equity band is where candidates report the most movement, typically in response to a competing offer. Because the grant is a dollar figure, ask for a specific dollar target, and ask what price per unit it will be converted at so you know how many units you are actually getting.
Sign-on bonus
Cash you can spend, which matters more than usual when the equity is illiquid. Tie the ask to something documented: unvested public stock or a bonus you forfeit by leaving. Senior offers have included a sign-on split across years one and two.
Timing
Waymo's process can stall in team matching for weeks or longer. Use that: keep other processes moving, and make sure any decision deadline lines up with your other offers rather than landing before them.
Waymo equity is not Google equity
This is the most common mistake in valuing a Waymo offer. Waymo is majority-owned by Alphabet and its process feels like Google's, but new hires receive Waymo's own private equity units, not GOOG shares, and we found no evidence that candidates can choose GOOG instead. Moving between Google and Waymo is a full new hire, not an internal transfer, and unvested equity does not carry across in either direction.
That changes the math. A Google grant is liquid public stock you can sell as it vests. A Waymo grant is an illiquid private asset you can sell only when Waymo runs a liquidity event, at a price Waymo sets. Ask your recruiter three questions in writing: the dollar value of the grant, the price per unit it converts at, and how employees have been able to sell shares in the past. If you are leaving vested or soon-to-vest public stock behind, that is a real cost, and a fair basis for a larger sign-on.
What the $126B valuation does to your grant
Waymo's February 2026 round valued it at $126B, up from more than $45B in October 2024. For a new hire that cuts both ways. The business is clearly growing: paid robotaxi service now runs in 14 US cities, with more announced. But equity offers are stated in dollars, and reports suggest offer bands did not rise with the valuation, so the same dollar grant now buys roughly a third as many units as it did in 2024. The easy upside from that re-rating went to the people who were already there.
None of that makes a Waymo offer bad. It means the equity line deserves a hard look rather than a headline read. Price it at the grant value, assume no liquidity for a while, and ask yourself whether the offer still works on base, bonus and sign-on alone. If it doesn't, that tells you where to negotiate.
Where the leverage is, in order
Candidates report that Waymo sets numbers partly by looking at competing offers and that first offers leave room to move, especially on equity and sign-on, while base rarely moves. So rank your effort this way. Get the level right first, because it moves every component at once. Then push the equity grant with a specific dollar target backed by a competing offer or market data for your level. Then use the sign-on to cover what you lose by leaving liquid stock behind.
Expect a slower process than at most companies: a hiring committee and then team matching can take weeks. Keep your other processes alive while you wait, and put your ask in one clear, specific message once the offer is in writing. Frequently asked questions about Waymo comp
Does Waymo negotiate salary?
Yes, though not evenly. Candidates report that base salary rarely moves, while the equity grant and sign-on bonus do, usually in response to a competing offer or strong market data for the level. The level assigned by the hiring committee is the biggest lever, because it sets base, bonus and equity band together.
Do Waymo employees get Google stock?
No. New hires receive Waymo's own private equity units, not Alphabet (GOOG) shares, and there is no public evidence of an option to choose GOOG instead. Waymo equity can only be sold through liquidity events the company runs, so value it as an illiquid private asset.
How does Waymo equity vest?
According to Levels.fyi data, Waymo equity vests over four years at 25% a year, with a one-year cliff and monthly vesting after that. Offers state the grant as a dollar amount, which is converted to units at the grant-date price. Confirm your exact schedule and the conversion price in writing.
What is Waymo's valuation?
Waymo raised $16B at a $126B post-money valuation in February 2026, with Alphabet as majority investor. That is nearly triple the more than $45B valuation from October 2024. Waymo is private and has not announced an IPO.
Does Waymo give signing bonuses?
Yes. Reported Waymo offers have included sign-ons from around $30K at staff level to $50K in year one plus $50K in year two for a senior engineer. Sign-ons are one of the more flexible parts of the package, so tie your ask to unvested stock or a bonus you forfeit by leaving.
Are Waymo levels the same as Google levels?
Waymo uses the same L3 to L8 labels and engineers compare them directly with Google levels, though we found no official mapping. On Levels.fyi, Waymo's average pay roughly matches or beats Google's through L5, but much of Waymo's number is illiquid private equity.
